Is first aid at work a legal requirement for businesses?

The Health & Safety regulations in Gibraltar state that employers have a legal duty to make arrangements to ensure their employees or visitors to their premises receive immediate attention, if they are injured or taken ill at work.

Whether the injury or illness is caused by the work they do, what is important is that they receive immediate attention and that an ambulance (190) is called in serious cases.

Workplace assessment for first aid and Health & Safety?

An employer should make an assessment of first-aid needs appropriate to the circumstances (hazards and risks) of each workplace.

Assessments should be undertaken by a competent person who understands Health & Safety and understands the business throughly.

what course Is best for my workplace?

Where an employer provides first-aiders in the workplace, they should ensure they have undertaken suitable training, have an appropriate first-aid qualification and remain competent to perform their role.

How much first-aid provision an employer has to make depends on the circumstances (the hazards and risks) of each workplace. Employers are well placed to determine the level of hazard and risk as they will be familiar with the exact circumstances of the workplace. There is no fixed level, but each employer needs to assess the equipment, facilities and personnel that are appropriate. That said you can use the following as a rough guide but by no means final:

* Emergency First Aid at Work - 1 day
* First Aid at Work - 3 day

* AED / CPR
* Paediatric/Sports First Aid

* Catastrophic Bleeding
* Forestry First Aid

I need to re-qualify my qualification, which course should I sign up for?

All first-aid training certificates, First Aid at Work, Emergency First Aid at Work and others are valid for three years.

Employers need to arrange retraining before certificates expire, although Heartstarterz will work with you to ensure renewal reminders are sent in advance. The re-qualification for First Aid at Work is for two days and updates the content to latest research and industry updates.

If the first-aider does not retrain or requalify before the expiry date on their current certificate they are no longer considered competent to act as a first-aider in the workplace.
